Assign a Private Number Plate to a Vehicle
How to assign a private number plate to a vehicle?
To assign a private number plate to a vehicle, you’ll need one of the following:
-
-
2
V778 retention document
You’ll get one of these if you take a registration number from another vehicle you own
Eligibility
There are certain rules your private registration must abide by:
- You can’t assign a registration number starting with ‘Q’ or ‘NIQ’
- You can’t put a private registration number on a ‘Q’ registered vehicle
- You can’t use a private registration number that makes a vehicle look newer than it is – for example, an ‘07’ registration number would not be allowed on a 2003 registered vehicle
The vehicle must:
- Be registered with DVLA in the UK
- Be able to move under its own power
- Be of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate
- Be available for inspection – DVLA will contact you if they need to inspect your vehicle
- Be taxed currently or have a SORN in place – if it’s had a SORN in place for more than 5 years, it must be taxed and have an MOT certificate
- If you have a historic (classic) vehicle you’ll also need a current MOT certificate, even if your vehicle is usually exempt from MOTs
Please note that there may be certain restrictions regarding the use of private (cherished) number plates on business vehicles. Prior to purchasing a private number plate through the DVLA, it is advisable to verify with your company whether you are authorised to use it on your vehicle.
