The HGV levy, (Opens in new window) suspended until 31 July because of coronavirus (COVID-19), is to be reintroduced from 1 August 2023.
The levy needs to be paid before entering the UK if the HGV:
- is not registered in the UK
- weights 12,000kg or more
The amount charged varies between £150 and £749 per vehicle per year, depending on the weight of the HGV (including the weight of the trailer if there is one), the amount of time it spends in the UK and its Euro emissions class.
According to the Department for Transport, the levy aims to ensure that HGVs make a contribution to the Treasury reflecting the wear and tear on the road network.
