5 ways to reduce your fleet’s CO2 emissions

10th June 2021

Why is it important to reduce your fleet's carbon footprint? It is crucial because lower levels of CO2 emissions will result in improved air quality and enhanced human health.

Air pollution remains one of the biggest risks to people’s health, and one of the leading causes of air pollution in the UK is transportation. Reducing your fleet’s carbon emissions will not only have a positive impact on the society, but you will also benefit from lower costs, reduced corporate tax and class 1A NICs.

With this in mind, we wanted to share with you some of the tips on how to reduce your fleet’s CO2 emissions:

You can measure your fleet’s CO2 emission by using a simple mathematical formula. For an ICE, you can use fuel – consumption reports and simply multiply the number of litres of fuel used by the appropriate number below:

1 litre of diesel – 2.67kg CO2

1 litre of petrol – 2.39kg CO2

1 litre of LPG – 1.533kg of CO2

Accurate planning can help you avoid traffic jams, as well as  find more efficient routes that can save you time and reduce CO2 emissions.  Bear in mind that sometimes the shortest possible route might not be the best one, as other factors need to be considered e.g. avoid roads that are likely to be congested.

Using telematics systems can assist in selecting the most efficient routes and times of the day. It enables emissions savings and increased productivity.

Carbon savings can be substantial if you electrify your fleet. Fully electric vehicles have zero tailpipe emissions – they are greener, cleaner and better for the environment. Plug-in Hybrids also emit zero tailpipe when being driven in electric mode, which will defer depending on their EV range.

There are also different incentives, grants and funding for EVs that the UK government has put in place, which can help you on your EV journey.

Staying on top of your fleet’s maintenance is important for reducing CO2 emissions. For example, tyres can play an important role in fuel economy. Under–inflated tyres can create more resistance, causing the engine to work harder and burn more fuel. Carpooling is more CO2 efficient than driving solo in an ICE vehicle. It can help  reduce the CO2 footprint and it’s a cheaper alternative for company’s employees to travel to work.
